EV Charging Station Payback Calculator

Estimate the payback period of an EV charging station from your investment, sessions per day, energy per session, selling price, energy cost and fixed costs.

Key takeaways

  1. 1Payback depends far more on utilisation (sessions per day) than on hardware price.
  2. 2Use your real energy cost including demand charges — they can double the effective price per kWh at DC sites.
  3. 3Treat the result as a first screen; financing, taxes and subsidies change the final figure.

Simple payback

Simple payback = total investment ÷ (energy sold × (price − energy cost) − fixed costs), using 30 days per month. Taxes, financing, subsidies and utilisation growth are not included.

What drives payback

Factor Why it matters How to improve it
Sessions per charger per day Every session adds margin; empty bays only add cost Choose sites with high traffic and long enough dwell time
Margin per kWh Selling price minus the real cost of energy Negotiate tariffs; manage demand peaks with dynamic power sharing
Investment Hardware, civil works, grid connection, permits Match the power class to dwell time instead of buying the largest charger
Fixed costs Rent, software, connectivity, maintenance Bundle sites with one back-end; use chargers with remote diagnostics

A worked example

Four DC chargers with a total investment of USD 120,000, each delivering 12 sessions of 30 kWh per day, sell 43,200 kWh a month. At a margin of USD 0.25 per kWh and USD 1,200 of fixed costs, net margin is about USD 9,600 a month — a simple payback of around 13 months. Halve the sessions and payback stretches to roughly 29 months: utilisation is the number to check first.

Frequently asked questions

What utilisation should I assume for a new site?
New public sites often start with only a few sessions per charger per day and grow as local EV numbers rise. Run the calculator with a low, a medium and a high scenario rather than one number.
Why include fixed monthly costs?
Site rent, back-end software, connectivity, maintenance and payment fees are paid whether or not cars charge. Leaving them out makes payback look shorter than it is.
